Awarded the Rank of Colonel by Patrick Airforce Base, Florida, 1994, before she went to conduct research among black, white, and Hispanic prisoners at Fort Leavenworth US Disciplinary Barracks (USDB), Kansas, and lived at the Cooke House, where, then, General Colin Powell had stayed a year earlier to dedicate the Buffalo Soldier Monument, and Barnes’s colonel rank was for the duration of Barnes’s USDB research.
